February 27, 2016: Watching political documentaries with Donna

Television with Mom is likely the thing we do together the most, as it is an easy default. But deciding what to watch is a struggle. Do we watch programs that she holds values about, but would likely not be able to follow in depth? What programming makes sense for her? Can I enjoy programs with her that are enjoyable for both of us? This has been a trial and error process, of course, but sometimes the answer is visible.

Often these days I find it hard to watch something “intellectual” when I’m sharing space with mom, mainly because so many of the values I have are ones she has shared and that includes conversations we are likely to not have again.

Today, I changed my mind and based on all the posts about it, I’m watching the poorly reviewed “Vanguard” film about the BPP. Just saw a Panther explain about “We took the position that we can never be free in a system that oppressed us,” and then spoke of the need to smash capitalism. I glanced at mom, who suddenly showed just how clearly she understood the statement as she started to clap and look inspired and have that twinkle in her eye.

I love it when she gives me more reason to love her more– and more proof that this house, with her little “Black Panther” Mollie, as well as the feeling of a liberated space we have here– matters just as much as history should. I love you, Donna Stainsby.
