March 14, 2015: Oranges and Caregiving

I could continue on with this for examples up until today… but if I were to do so, it would finish (so I think) with me handing her the orange and not paying attention to what she did after that. I also note that as Mom settled into her ‘new’ brain these kinds of ‘complications’ reduced a great deal. Like breaking in a new shoe, I guess.

First while of caregiving: “Oh my God, mom put salt and pepper on the orange… can I convince her that this is not what people do? How do we get past this??”

After a couple of months: “Oh, damn. Salt and pepper on the orange. That’s too bad. At least there’s still the yogurt.”

After more months: “Salt and pepper on the orange? I should try that… you know something? it’s not half bad.”

Author’s note: There have been no such orange incidents. All of our oranges have been eaten and peeled in the normal manner. Orange you glad I told this story anyhow?
